- Keep phones, radios, and backup batteries charged when sheltering is possible.
- Tell an out-of-area contact where you are and who is with you.
Household Setup
- Gather household members, pets, medications, keys, and essential documents.
- Close or move away from windows if instructed for the hazard.
- Keep basic sanitation supplies, trash bags, wipes, and hygiene items nearby.
- Set aside food that does not require cooking or refrigeration.
- Keep a flashlight in each occupied room.
- Plan for toilets, diapers, menstrual supplies, and cleanup if water service is disrupted.
During and After
- Avoid using grills, generators, or camp stoves indoors.
- Use text updates when networks are crowded.
- Monitor official updates until the shelter guidance is lifted.
- Check on neighbors by phone or text when it is safe.
- Document damage or spoiled supplies after the event if needed.
- Restock used items before storing the kit again.
